The current Student Life Center, located in Building 9C, is open to all students Mondays to Fridays where students can go to relax, study or do homework. In just a few years, a brand new center will be built and opened on campus that will be an expansion to the current Student Life Center.

This new Student Center, which will be built where buildings 17, 18, 19B, 19C and 20 used to be, will contain upgrades to what is currently found in the current Student Life Center. According to Mt. SAC’s Official website on Feb. 25 2019, the new student center will have three floors compared to the current one-story building.

The first floor will feature a convenience store and an improved amount of study space for students to study alone or with fellow students. The second floor will feature a multi-cultural center, student club kitchen and an updated room for Associated Students. The third floor will also have event space and conference rooms for Associated Students to hold important meetings.

When asked about what else students can expect when the new Student Center opens, Dr. Andi Fejeran Sims, Director of Student Life said, “The new Student Center will increase visibility for student engagement opportunities provided by Student Life and Associated Students.”

The new Student Center project that is going to be built on campus was approved with the help of Measure GO passed by voters this past November. Measure GO is a measure that Mt. SAC pushed to help get funds in order to improve the campus for years to come.

According to an article on Voters Edge on Nov. 6, 2018, this measure also included for the campus to construct facilities to help the needs of the campus. The article also shows that Measure GO will repair and upgrade other parts of the campus that are in need of important maintenance.

“I cannot pinpoint one place of excitement,” Sims said. “Students have been instrumental in designing this building and what our population needs, all of it will be amazing.”

The Student Center project is expected to be completed and opened in 2022, but which semester it will open in is currently unknown at this time.
